Here we go! As Debi's Dazzle, today is the day she needs to feel our strongest protective force. Actually, she's so selfless, with everything going on she's still probably trying to put that force field around me to calm my nerves, her baby sis and she's doing the same for all of you. Hahaha.
Today's subject on ZEBRA Daily News will be a bit lighthearted, so I will be chatting about Debi's passions...
Ever since she was seven, Debi said to everyone that would cross her path, "When I grow up I am going to become a doctor." Most adults smiled and chalked it up to childhood dreams, like wanting to be an astronaut, an NBA player or a famous Hollywood actor. She was so serious, she signed up for CPR classes and EMT training, but she was so young and small they used her as the patient, instead of a student of the course. Although she faced many naysayers, she was steadfast in her goals and her ambition would carry her to her dreams.
Long story short... she grew up, she joined the army in the summer after high school and went off to basic training, went to college as a premed student, graduated with a chemistry degree from University of San Diego, moved to New Orleans after graduation, broke her jaw there (no, she was not drinking - hahaha), returned to Oregon to continue her healing and treatments, was told by all the dentists and dental surgeons that dentistry was a better path to follow, went to Portland State University to get her biology degree, got accepted and attended OHSU for dental school, got married, had two amazing kids and then graduated with a dental degree. She has now run, along with her husband, Scott, two dental practices for a tad over 20 years. Phew, I need a break from my run-on sentence, I am already fatigued from writing and recapping that journey.
Today, Debi is a dedicated dentist, but her new true passion now lies in the garden. So, when she grows up she wants to be a gardener.
The love for gardening started in 2016, when Debi walked outside on the family's newly purchased 5-acre property in Sherwood, OR and saw a tree with ripe plums on it, plucked one off and bit into it. She was shocked by the splendidness of flavor, so sweet. Her first attempt at growing something in the garden was a tomato plant. Watching it mature, thrive and bear fruit was very rewarding. Currently, the garden takes up a quarter of their property with beautiful flowers, fresh fruits and vegetables, for the most delicious, fresh and healthy farm to table meals. When she returns home from work in the spring, summer and fall she spends her days outside until sunset. Not even the occasional bee or wasp sting will keep her away (and she is allergic to them). If that does not scream passion, then I don't know what does!
She has the Midas touch when it comes to plants, everything she grows thrives. Me? I’m more like Medusa, I so much as look at a plant and it turns to stone. You could say we’re the perfect yin and yang of gardening... And of course in life too.
